Greeting from Bali

Bali is one of small islands in Indonesia which has an area more then 5.000 square kilometers. The Balinese are closely inspired by their religion which is also inseparable with their daily lives. It won't be difficult for visitors to split the natives in their religion ritual and ceremonies. There is also a small minority of Moslems, Christians and Buddhist of Chinese and Balinese origin. More than 700.000 visitors arrive each year on this beautiful island that exactly fits the western definition of a tropical paradise, famous for its charming people, lovely scenery and the sophisticated artistry of its distinctly Indonesian-Hindu civilization. Earlier versions of this Hindu culture once flourished over large areas of java and portions of the other islands, but it's now found almost exclusively in Bali. But nowadays Bali is less a western pacific paradise than an Asian hotbox - overpopulated, underfed and prone to eruptions, both volcanic and political. The Balinese believe themselves a blessed people who have been owned a magic land. They look upon themselves as the custodians of Pulau Dewata, the island of the gods. Even heaven to a Balinese is to return to live in Bali, hopefully in the same family as a new child. You often hear Balinese refer to their island as a "safe" place to live. And they make sure as hosts, that it stays that way by diligently carrying out duties which will assure continued protection. The attitudes and temperament of the Balinese reflect this sense of security. Every act must be in harmony with the natural forces which hold supreme sway over the island. Although each male citizen with a family generally owns the land he labors and live on, theoretically the island is divine property leased to the people who cultivate it and live from it.

The temple is the most important institution in Bali and the center of Balinese religious activities. Renowned as the "Island of Thousands Temples", there are actually at least 50.000 scattered all over the island. Large or small, simple or elaborately carved, they are everywhere. In houses, courtyards, marketplaces, cemeteries, rice paddies, beaches, in arid scrub land, on barren rocks offshore, on deserted hilltops and mountain heights, deep inside caves, within the tangled roots of banyan trees.
